Accounting Students Qualify for
Unprecedented Eleventh Time in National Case
Competition Final
Five students from Wright
State's Raj Soin College of Business continued
the Department of Accountancy's national
reputation for excellence by being selected for the
2008 Institute of Management Accountants (IMS) case
competition. The 2008 team consisting of Diana
Dafler, Stephanie Jergens, Rocco Latino, Michael
Pabst and William Ryan was one of only four teams
selected from a field of top colleges in the nation
invited to attend the IMA's Annual Conference
in Tampa, Florida.
The students took a creative
approach to this year's challenge by presenting
their strategic recommendations as the
A-Team; in the video which qualified them for
the final four. According to John Talbott,
Ph.D., a professor of accountancy and mentor to the
team, the students were challenged to evaluate,
interpret and synthesize strategic accounting
recommendations for a non-profit health-related
organization that was facing rapid
growth.
"Once again our students
proved that they are tops in the nation when it comes
to applying the strategic implications of accounting
principles to real-world business challenges.
In addition to excelling in the national area, these
students are well on their way to successful careers
in the profession as are all of our accountancy
graduates", Talbott said.
Jergens couldn't agree more. "My
education at Wright State University as well as the
networking opportunities available through its
organizations have helped me develop as a
professional and receive multiple internships to
enhance my skills." Jergens is
completing a summer internship with
PricewaterhouseCoopers.
Pabst added,"My
internship at Flagel, Huber, Flagel, & Co. was
very helpful in starting my career in
accounting. Wright State has so many alumni in
the area who love to hire Wright State students.
I'm excited about my career choice and
future at Flagel."
Diana Dafler, Masters of
Accountancy candidate, will be pursuing a career in
public accounting after having completed an
internship with Clark, Schaefer, Hackett. Rocco
Latino is a financial assistant for a major grant in
workforce education at Wright State University and is
also staff sergeant in the Air National Guard 269th
Combat Communications Squadron. William Ryan,
will his begin position with Brixey & Meyer in
August as a staff accountant. Ryan
noted that he and fellow team members were
especially excited to network and have lunch with
some of the nation's top accounting
professionals including the current president of the
IMA at this year's conference.
As the nation’s only
five-time winner of the IMA competition, Wright State
has won this 16-year-old competition more than any
other college in the nation, with titles in 1992,
1994, 2000, 2001 and 2005. Wright State is also
the nation's only university to qualify two
teams for the finals three times.
