A team of Wright State University undergraduate
students, primarily from the Raj Soin College of Business, placed
second in the nationwide Ethics Bowl competition.
This marked the fourth consecutive year for the Wright State team to
finish in the top 10, and they won the event in 2002. A key to WSU's
winning record is the comprehensive moral analysis framework
designed by Joseph Petrick, professor of management and team
advisor.
The format for the event entailed six competitive rounds, each
consisting of an initial 10 minute oral analysis and resolution of a
different, complex moral case, followed by an opposing team rebuttal
and questions from a panel of judges. The contest poses complex
moral cases on a range of controversial topics that people face as
family members, employees, and citizens. Topics debated included
such issues as universal health care insurance, restricting judicial
sentencing authority, and genetic testing of high-performance
athletes.
"We had some stiff competition," said Joe Drayer, a pre-law major.
"It was a wonderful extracurricular learning opportunity to work
with some extremely intelligent people who were dedicated to
improving their moral analysis and oral argumentation skills."
The team competed against heavy hitters like the U.S. Military
Academy at West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy, Indiana University,
Texas A&M University, and the University of Florida.
