Wright State University events to help celebrate 2003 centennial of flight
This year, the 100th anniversary of powered flight will bring visitors from around the world to Dayton to celebrate not only the Wright brothers' achievements, but also the entrepreneurial spirit, determination, creativity, innovation and dedication that is still found in the Miami Valley today. Wright State has scheduled a full slate of activities to commemorate the historic achievement of Dayton's homegrown heroes.
"We're excited about the range of activities we have planned," said Jay Thomas, associate provost for research, dean of the School of Graduate Studies and chair of the WSU Inventing Flight Committee. "In addition to an unprecedented number of collaborative events with our colleagues at U.D., Central State and Sinclair, Wright State will be hosting international symposia on aviation photography and aviation psychology. With events ranging from the arts to psychology, there's something for everyone."
This year's events at Wright State kicked off with a concert on Jan. 3 by music faculty members In-Hong Cha and Shelley Jagow featuring original music for saxophone and violin as part of Hipple Research's 12th Night fundraiser. Other activities include the world premiere of original music by composer Robert Jager in a joint concert by Wright State and the University of Dayton. Symposia will be held on the lessons of flight; aviation and the human experience; aviation photography; and aviation psychology. In addition, Wright State will host a Wright brothers photography exhibition.
The university's events are in partnership with Dayton's Inventing Flight: The Centennial Celebration that will bring together Dayton's rich aviation heritage with many of its cultural assets to create an incredible 17-day celebration from July 3 through July 20, 2003-making Dayton the place to be in 2003.
