WSU Graduate Courses - Communication/COMCOM 611 PERFORMANCE FOR THE MEDIA (Credits: 4) Development of skills necessary for effective television and radio presentations. Study of criteria for selecting appropriate talent, and frequent practice in a wide range of media settings. PREREQUISITE: COM 111 OR INSTRUCTOR PERMISSION. COM 621 LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT (Credits: 4) The development of speech and language in the preschool years. COM 629 URBAN COMMUNICATIONS THEORY (Credits: 4) Processes and institutions by which individuals and groups communicate in an urban environment. Model of an urban communication system developed by interdisciplinary systems approach. COM 632 GENDER AND COMMUNICATION (Credits: 4) Theoretical and pragmatic consideration of how and why men's and women's communication behaviors are similar to one another in some instances, yet different in others, and how men and women can communicate more effectively. PREREQUISITE: COM 102. COM 639 FREEDOM OF SPEECH (Credits: 4) Study of the growth and development of free speech in the United States. Emphasis on the development of definitions of free speech and various communication strategies in different settings. COM 641 ADVANCED INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION (Credits: 4) In-depth view of interpersonal communication skills: presenting, receiving, and challenging. A group context is used to promote self-directed changes in interpersonal style. PREREQUISITE: COM 102 OR PERMISSION OF INSTRUCTOR. COM 643 INTERVIEWING (Credits: 4) Through a matrix organizational structure, students experience theory in selection, survey, journalistic, performance appraisal, persuasion, and counseling interviewing situations. COM 645 CONFERENCE LEADERSHIP (Credits: 4) Simulation that focuses on the creation, development, and execution of a professional conference through assessment of participants' needs. Experiences include completing group tasks through assigned roles developed from current leadership theories. COM 647 ORGANIZATIONAL COMMUNICATION (Credits: 4) Application of organizational communication theories and major theoretical perspectives to problems in public and private-sector organizations. Includes a simulation which focuses on conflict management, leadership, and decision making in a business context. COM 648 CASE STUDIES IN ORGANIZATIONAL COMMUNICATION (Credits: 4) A critical analysis of communication issues and problems in organizations through an examination of various cases. PREREQUISITE: COM 446 AND COM 447/647. COM 649 SURVEY OF COMMUNICATION RESEARCH (Credits: 4) Provides a basic knowledge of the behavioral approach and of the current theories and experiments being conducted in communication research. COM 651 COMMUNICATION CONSULTING AND TRAINING (Credits: 4) By means of a matrix structure, consulting and training theories are experienced in communication programs and processes PREREQUISITE: COM 447 OR PERMISSION OF INSTRUCTOR. COM 653 COMMUNICATION AND CONFLICT (Credits: 4) In-depth study of the function of communication in conflict/crisis situations. Emphasis on the role that communication performs in conflict resolution in intrapersonal, interpersonal, group, and international situations. COM 654 FEATURE STORY WRITING (Credits: 4) (Also listed as ENG 654.) Includes finding, writing, polishing, and marketing feature material. COM 655 NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION (Credits: 4) Theory, survey of research, and experimental learning in nonverbal communication. Exploration of types and forms and of methods of sending and receiving nonverbal communication. COM 657 INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION (Credits: 4) Study of communication in intercultural environments. Emphasis on research and theory to better understand the complexity of intercultural communication interactions. COM 658 EDITING FOR THE MEDIA (Credits: 4) (Also listed as ENG 658.) Editing of copy for mass media with emphasis on newspaper format, headline writing, rewriting, and general copy desk. COM 662 MASS MEDIA LAW AND REGULATION (Credits: 4) Includes the study of laws and regulations affecting mass media. COM 664 BROADCAST CRITICISM (Credits: 4) Analysis of contemporary programming and production practices including the development of critical standards for evaluation. COM 671 TOPICS IN COMMUNICATION (Credits: 4) Examination of special topics in the various areas of speech communication. Titles vary. COM 689 COMMUNICATING WITH THE ELDERLY (Credits: 4) Analysis of the unique communication behaviors of the elderly and the physical, social, and emotional changes that cause these behaviors. Development of interpersonal, interviewing, and reporting skills by direct interaction with this age group. 3 hours lecture, 1 hour off-campus interviewing. COM 741 PRINCIPLES AND APPLICATION OF COMMUNICATION THEORY (Credits: 4) Examines communication theory relevant to the role of the communication specialist. Special consideration given to the changing pattern of communication roles and the application of communication theory to the problems of the utilization specialist. Also focuses on the possible consequences of the diffusion of communication innovations within the business, educational, and governmental institutions of American society. COM 781 INDEPENDENT RESEARCH (Credits: 1 TO 4) Supervised independent research on a specific subject.
