Charles Taylor appointed dean of Wright State’s College of Liberal Arts Charles S. Taylor, Ph.D., has been appointed dean of Wright State University’s College of Liberal Arts, effective April 1, 2006. Taylor has served as interim dean of the college since October 2005 and emerged as the lead candidate in a national search. (03/31/2006) Wright State professor says “Change Your World Through Your Libraries” Whether public, academic, or school, the library is vital to maintaining an educated citizenry. Today’s library patron also expects a convenient, productive trip to the library branch or Web site, says Bonnie Mathies, Ph.D., professor and associate dean of the College of Education and Human Services at Wright State University. The need for strong libraries and the expectations of today’s library consumer will be addressed when Mathies presents, “Change Your World Through Your Libraries,” on Tuesday, April 4, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Paul Laurence Dunbar Library on campus. A reception will follow.
(03/31/2006) “Ellis Island of the West” tells little-known stories of Chinese immigration to America Gateway to Gold Mountain: The Angel Island Immigration Experience, a traveling exhibition that tells the story of Chinese immigrants’ experience at Angel Island, will make its first stop in Ohio at Wright State University from April 9–June 30. This may involve being in the right place at the right time or making a spur-of-the-moment decision with long-term ramifications. In this case, the timing was perfect for Rob Anderson, Cari Hillman and Mike Mills to attend a recent graduate program open house at Wright State University. The three students were selected in a random drawing for free tuition for three academic quarters. (03/30/2006) Emotional program at Wright State targets drinking and driving It’s not just another lecture about drinking and driving. Mark Sterner had dreams of becoming the first in his family to graduate from college. Instead, he became the first to go to prison. Three of his friends died for his mistakes. Sterner will present his tragic story at Wright State University on Thursday, April 6, at 7 p.m. in the Student Union Apollo Room. (03/27/2006) Your opportunity to commission a personalized lullaby Wright State University Music Professor Leland Bland, Ph.D., has composed more than 20 major works in recent years for large ensembles and chamber groups. But he has never written a lullaby. Until now. As one of the silent auction items for the seventh annual ArtsGala at Wright State on Saturday, April 1, Bland has agreed to compose a personalized lullaby. Known for his astute coverage of issues affecting African Americans, Yette will present “Black Choices, White Media: The Politics of Representation in News Today,” on Tuesday, April 4, at 2 p.m. in the Student Union Apollo Room. (03/27/2006) Archeology dig shows slaves true American pioneers The image of slaves as passive participants in American history is being shattered through findings at a slave archeology site in North Carolina. Historians are learning from digs near New Salem, that many slaves built their own houses using African designs, hunted and used guns regularly, designed and made their own pottery and taught their masters how to live in the hot, tropical climate of the South. Leland Ferguson, Ph.D., the researcher behind these findings and a distinguished professor emeritus of historical archeology at the University of South Carolina, will share his observations with a select group of Miami Valley educators this summer.

Her tales from a life in politics, from voter registration drives to campaign strategies to her experiences with leaders and activists who have shaped America will be part of “Women and Men Organizing for Change.” Brazile’s presentation, sponsored by the Bolinga Black Cultural Resources Center and part of Women’s History Month activities at Wright State, is Monday, March 27, at 2 p.m. in the Student Union Apollo Room. The Wright State University economics professor has studied the impact of more than 1,000 major league players from foreign lands since 1940.

(03/09/2006) Anti-Islam cartoons topic for forum at WSU on religion, politics and censorship When a Danish newspaper published cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad as a terrorist and killer, the repercussions were felt throughout the world. To learn more about the ramifications of this cartoon incident, Wright State University will host a Greater Dayton Interfaith Trialogue forum on “The Cartoon Controversy: Religion, Politics and Censorship” on Wednesday, March 15. The 7 to 9 p.m. program in the Student Union Apollo Room is free to the public. (03/08/2006) WSU students aim to “make a difference” helping Katrina victims in Mississippi over spring break Molly McGraw and Mary Hinschlager are among a group of 25 Wright State University students who will soon participate in a clinic learning about house painting, installing dry wall and other projects involved in refurbishing a house. But McGraw and Hinschlager aren’t majoring in construction. They are preparing to spend their spring break week at Gulfport, Miss. helping in the Hurricane Katrina rebuilding effort.

(03/06/2006) WSU students revamp CountyCorp Web site as part of business assistance program CountyCorp, the private non-profit development corporation created to improve housing and economic opportunities for residents in Montgomery County and beyond, needed a new Web site. Theirs was outdated and lacked the necessary information to make it effective. Now, thanks to the efforts of Wright State University business students, an expanded and renovated Web site, http://www.countycorp.com, is bringing increased recognition and business for the agency. (03/02/2006) Former U.S. Ambassador Shirley Barnes says human trafficking victimizes 800,000 worldwide Retired United States Ambassador to Madagascar, Shirley Barnes, will argue for the establishment of stronger international anti-trafficking laws to protect women and children from unimaginable 21st century sexual and labor abuse in a lecture on Monday, March 6, at 5 p.m. in Wright State University’s Student Union Apollo Room. A reception will follow the talk, sponsored by the Bolinga Black Cultural Resources Center.
