MBA students at Wright State develop Web site analysis of Dayton area industry groups
MBA students at the Raj Soin College of Business at Wright State University have evaluated the competitive environment for new businesses in three key industries relevant to the Dayton economy. These reports can be found at http://www.geocities.com/innovating_competitively.
The original analysis involves material not found elsewhere and will benefit the business community by outlining how innovations in key industries can lead to success. Scott Williams, Ph.D., an associate professor of management, directed the activity as a capstone project for 88 MBA students.
“We focused on industries primarily responsible for current and future trade and employment,” Williams explained, “and for Dayton we selected aerospace, advanced materials/manufacturing, and data management/mining. These are fields with employment potential for the students and representative of the business community we serve as an academic institution. Also, because industries transcend geographic boundaries, the businesses we selected are emerging nationally and also represent important innovations in industries that are particularly important locally.” The students analyzed factors needed for success by each business in its competitive environment.
Williams said examples of the emerging business models analyzed on the Web site include Nanofilm in advanced materials, Virgin Galactic in aerospace and VeriChip in data management. Some 15 other reports also are available on the Web site, and more will be added this summer.
The project defined the terms business model, emerging business model and strategic cluster industries and included an executive summary, internal and external assessments, strategy analysis, financial projections and concluding statement for each company.
The Web site is expected to be of interest to officials with the firms surveyed, their competitors and others interested in that industry field, plus economic development professionals, venture capitalists and other potential investors, banking and financial organizations and entrepreneurs.
