WSU students win national competition in accounting for fifth time in 13 years
The unprecedented success of Wright State University accountancy students continued recently when they won the National Student Case Competition sponsored by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA).
This marked the fifth time in 13 years that a WSU Raj Soin College of Business team won the event. No other college has won the competition more than twice. Wright State also placed two teams in the final four for the second consecutive year, and no other school has achieved this level of success in the competition.
Students on the winning team are Ashley Bussen, Chad Fast, James Holm, Sravan Reddy and Andy Valerius. The second team from Wright State was composed of Scott Christy, Sheena Lambert, Kevin Locker, Kendra Newman and Shannon Sinclair. The other two schools in the finals were James Madison University and Western Illinois University.
John Talbot, Ph.D., professor of accountancy and team advisor, said the competition topic involved the development of a strategic plan for Heartland Furniture Company. He said this was based on a composite of midsize U.S. furniture manufacturers, with each team in the competition preparing a videotape analysis.
The top four teams were invited to the IMA national conference in Boston to make live presentations before the judges. “At the conclusion of the conference presentation, the judges pose another question,” explained Talbot. “The students have five minutes to formulate an answer, and this can determine the winner.” Wright State previously won the competition in 1992, 1994, 2000 and 2001.
