Groundbreaking ceremony held for Joshi Research Center at WSU College of Engineering and Computer Science

joshi_center_1_sm.jpg A groundbreaking ceremony for the Krishan and Vicky Joshi Research Center at the Wright State University College of Engineering and Computer Science was held today, April 11.

WSU President Dr. Kim Goldenberg, WSU College of Engineering and Computer Science Dean James Brandeberry, Ph.D., Krishan and Vicky Joshi and Charles Walsh, president of the Wright Center of Innovation for Advanced Data Management and Analysis, participated in the 3 p.m. event at the construction site between the Fritz and Dolores Russ Engineering Center and the Student Union.

The state has awarded Wright State University and its partners an $11 million grant, with a $32 million match in capital funding, to establish the Wright Center. The funding is part of Ohio’s Third Frontier Initiative sponsored by Governor Bob Taft and managed by the Ohio Department of Development. The goal is to create jobs by expanding the state’s high-tech research capabilities.

The Wright Center is an unprecedented collaboration among industry, academic and government resources to help position Ohio as an international leader in data management. It is expected to influence the creation of more than 500 jobs and $65 million in research.

The Krishan and Vicky Joshi Research Center is a $10 million building project that will include office space for the Wright Center and research laboratory space for the College of Engineering and Computer Science faculty and students. The project, which will expand the engineering facilities by some 30 percent, is expected to be completed by July of 2006. The four-story structure will encompass 50,000 square feet.

Krishan Joshi, Ph.D., is president, CEO and founder of UES, Inc., a high technology research and development company headquartered in Dayton. Joshi and his wife, Vicky, have

supported the WSU College of Engineering and Computer Science for many years. They are major contributors to this project.

The R.C. Appenzeller Visualization Laboratory, which will be located in the Joshi Center, is named after Robert C. Appenzeller, president and CEO of Machine Products Corp. The Dayton business provides specialized equipment and technology throughout the world to the electric motor industry. Appenzeller and his wife, Joan, fund a WSU engineering scholarship, and they are major contributors to the college.

Ronald D. Bullock, a WSU alumnus and president, Bison Gear & Engineering Corp., St. Charles, Illinois, also is a major contributor to the Joshi Research Center. Bullock is a member of the college advisory board. In addition, an anonymous gift was received naming the James Brandeberry Conferencing Center in honor of the current and founding dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science.
