As a highlight of Wright State University’s celebration of Women’s History Month, Jean Kilbourne, Ed.D., visiting research scholar at Wellesley College, will present “Deadly Persuasion: Advertising and Addiction” on Thursday, March 10, at 12:30 p.m. in the Student Union Apollo Room. The event is free and open to the public.
Kilbourne is internationally recognized for her pioneering work on alcohol and tobacco advertising and the image of women in advertising. A widely published writer and speaker, Kilbourne has twice been named “Lecturer of the Year” by the National Association of Campus Activities. She has presented at a wide range of conferences, including those focusing on gender, addictions and public health, eating disorders, violence, criminal justice and media literacy. Her recent book Can’t Buy My Love: How Advertising Changes the Way We Think and Feel won the Distinguished Publication Award from the Association for Women in Psychology. Kilbourne is also known for her award-winning documentaries Killing Us Softly, Slim Hopes and Calling the Shots. She is also a frequent guest on radio and television programs including The Today Show, 20/20, and The Oprah Winfrey Show. Kilbourne has served as an advisor to the Surgeon General, testified before the U.S. Congress and served on the National Advisory Council on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.
