September 18, 2009 Wright State celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with free public events A variety of free activities -- including an art exhibit of folk art quilts, lecture on “Latinos in the Heartland” and Latino night of ethnic music -- is scheduled from Sept. 17 to Oct. 13 for Hispanic Heritage Month for 2009 at Wright State University.“It’s important for the greater Dayton community to learn about Latino culture because the Hispanic community is rapidly increasing in this region and throughout Ohio,” said Tony Ortiz, Wright State liaison to the Latino community and director of sports medicine at the university. “To be an informed community citizen in the 21st century, it’s important to recognize and understand characteristics of other cultures,” he said. Hispanic Heritage Month activities will feature Flora Zarate, an artist of Inca descent from the highland region of Ayacuho in Peru, who depicts the culture of her people through folk art quilts. The free exhibit will run from Tuesday, Oct. 6, through Friday, Oct. 23, in the Student Union Art Gallery. She will present a talk on her work on Oct. 6 at 12:15 p.m. in the Student Union Pathfinder Lounge. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. On Thursday, Oct. 8, Jorge Chapa, Ph.D., director of the Center on Democracy in a Multiracial Society and professor of sociology and Latina/Latino Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will discuss “Latinos in the Heartland: Opportunities and Challenges.” His free lecture in the Millett Hall Atrium will begin at 12:20 p.m. On Tuesday, Oct. 13, a Latin Night will feature a local band performing a program of free Latin music, and food will be available for purchase from Los Mariachis Restaurant. All proceeds from this 6-9:30 p.m. event in the Student Union Apollo Room will benefit the Latino Scholarship Fund. Co-sponsors of this activity will be the Asian/Hispanic/Native American Center and the Puerto Rican & Caribbean Organization. The month-long celebration also will include free films on the first all-female mariachi band and the Lost City of the Incas shown in the Multicultural Lounge, Millett Hall, Room 161 at 12:15 p.m. on, respectively, Tuesday, Sept. 22, and Thursday, Oct. 1.
