Wright State University faculty member selected as HP Innovation Research Award Recipient

Amit Sheth_sm.jpg DAYTON, OH--Amit Sheth, LexisNexis Ohio Eminent Scholar at Wright State University, has been selected as one of 60 professors to receive an award as part of HP’s 2009 Innovation Research Program, which is designed to create opportunities for colleges, universities and research institutes around the world to conduct breakthrough collaborative research with HP.

Wright State University's Kno.e.sis Center will collaborate with HP Labs on a research initiative focused on developing constantly changing social knowledge models for question answering and enriching enterprise social software solutions. This project will develop techniques for guided search and browsing as well as classification and selection of information to improve information processing and knowledge sharing.

Sheth, principal investigator of the winning proposal, "Model Generation and Model Extension for Information and Knowledge Management," and a professor in the Computer Science and Engineering Department of WSU's College of Engineering and Computer Science, will lead the collaborative project with HP Labs. This work builds upon the work of Christopher Thomas, Sheth's Ph.D. student, and his collaboration with HP labs, which started with an internship at HP Labs in Palo Alto, CA.

"Dr. Sheth's work in information integration, workflow management and semantic interoperability has already led to several commercial products and two companies," said Bor Jang, Ph.D., dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science. "This tremendous opportunity to collaborate with HP in pursuit of innovation will enhance teaching, learning and research at Wright State for faculty and students alike. Wright State is honored to be among the 46 world-class universities in 12 countries around the globe to receive this award."

Wright State's Kno.e.sis Center focuses on realizing a knowledge society with semantics and services as key enablers. The work of researchers leads to prototypes that are evaluated and developed with the participation of academic and commercial partners, and then licensed for real-world deployment and commercialization. Founded as part of Ohio's Third Frontier program, the center includes cutting-edge research in the use of semantic and services science for data integration, analysis and process management to leverage innovation in data-intensive technologies for economic expansion.

“Our goal with this program is to collaborate with the brightest minds from around the world to tackle the industry’s most complex problems and push the frontiers of fundamental science,” said Prith Banerjee, senior vice president, Research, HP and director, HP Labs. “Wright State University has demonstrated outstanding achievement and a vision that will help inspire technological innovation and address the most complex challenges and opportunities facing the industry in the next decade.”

HP reviewed nearly 300 proposals from more than 140 universities in 29 countries on a range of topics within the eight high-impact research themes at HP Labs--analytics, cloud, content transformation, digital commercial print, immersive interaction, information management, intelligent infrastructure and sustainability.
