Wright State welcomes "Year of the Ox" with New Year celebration
Wright State University will usher in the "Year of the Ox" at its annual Chinese and Vietnamese New Year's Celebration. The event will take place on Thursday, Jan. 22, 11:45 a.m.–2:00 p.m. in the Student Union Apollo Room and is presented by the Asian/Hispanic/Native American Center.
In the Chinese lunar calendar, each year is represented by an animal. The cycle repeats every 12 years. By this calendar, 2009 is the "Year of the Ox." People born in an ox year are believed to be honest, loyal, practical, traditional and persevering. Ox celebrities include Barack Obama, George Clooney, Princess Diana and Walt Disney.
The celebration will include a martial arts demonstration, Chinese folk dances, and a presentation on the meaning of the New Year. Participants will receive Year-of-the-Ox souvenirs and taste traditional foods from the Chinese and Vietnamese cultures. The event will also offer fortune telling, traditional games and a Vietnamese flower market.
Admission to the celebration is free with a WSU ID or $5 for the general public. For more information, please contact the Asian/Hispanic/Native American Center at (937) 775-2798.
