Wright State University celebrates Native American heritage

Drums, dance and storytelling take center stage in November as Wright State celebrates Native American Heritage Month. The activities are organized by the WSU Asian/Hispanic/Native American (AHNA) Center and include an art exhibit, guest speaker, films and interactive festivities.

Every year since 1994, the president of the United States has designated November as a time to honor the legacy of the American Indian and Alaska Native peoples. Wright State follows this tradition as it promotes diversity on its campus and in the community.

Nearly 60 Wright State students identify themselves as Native American. The AHNA Center was established to "create an appreciation and understanding of the diverse Asian, Hispanic, and Native American cultures represented within the community," according to its mission statement.

The Student Union Art Gallery will display a collection of artwork by Edwin George, an artist from the Eastern Band Cherokee tribe, from now until Nov. 14. On Oct. 30, author, poet and columnist Jim Northrup will give a presentation on his career and his life on a reservation. The AHNA Center will also host a "Native American Celebration" on Nov.6 in the Pathfinder Lounge. The event will include drum-making, storytelling and tribal dancing.

The following is a list of events planned for the month. All are free and open to the public. For more information visit www.wright.edu/admin/ahna/ or call the AHNA Center at (937) 775-2798.
