Multicultural Halloween at Wright State features worldwide fall celebrations, champion Chinese acrobat

Halloween in America means pumpkins, costumes, goblins, candy and trick or treat. But in other cultures, similar fall events are observed in different ways. The ninth annual Multicultural Halloween at Wright State University on Wednesday, Oct. 29, offers a chance to experience celebrations from other cultures, including:

• African American Kwanzaa
• Asian Indian Diwali
• Chinese and Vietnamese Mid-Autumn Festival
• Chusok, the Korean Thanksgiving
• Japanese “Bon” holiday
• Nigerian Yam Festival
• Mexican Day of the Dead
• Native American Fall Harvest

The 5–10 p.m. event, which is open to the public, will be held in the Student Union Apollo Room.

The festival's special feature is the Liang Acrobatic & Comedy Show featuring Liang Patti, a Chinese acrobat. Patti will perform the 2,000-year old art form of plate-spinning. She is a gold winner in the international acrobatic competition. She recently performed on the hit TV show "America's Got Talent," the "Today Show" and in a Justin Timberlake video. Her other acts include working with 25 hula-hoops at once while blindfolded, balancing knives and glasses of water plus a unique "yo-yo" act.

The celebration will also include free ethnic foods from around the world, a costume contest for children and adults, cultural displays, face painting, and balloon sculpture. Performances include a martial arts, Native American flute, music and dances from Africa, China, the Caribbean, France, Japan, Lebanon, Tahiti, Lebanon and the United States.

"The celebration gives people an opportunity to experience the diversity of our students and our community by learning about fall celebrations from around the world," said Dau Phu, a senior at Wright State and chairperson for the event.

Tickets for the general public, available at the door, are $10 for adults and $7 for children 5-12. For more details, visit the website www.wright.edu/admin/ahna/mhc or phone (937) 775-2798.
