Happy “Year of the Rat”
Wright State celebrates Chinese and Vietnamese New Year

In the Chinese Lunar Calendar, 2008 is the “Year of the Rat,” a calendar sequence that repeats every 12 years. People born in one of these years are respected for their self-sufficiency and noted for their charm and leadership abilities.

Presentations will be made on the origin and meaning of this celebration at Wright State University’s upcoming Chinese and Vietnamese New Year event. Chinese folk dancing, Kung Fu, Tai Chi, Jiujitsu and Thai kickboxing are a few of the featured performances at the university’s Chinese and Vietnamese New Year Celebration on Wednesday, February 6, 2008, from 11:45 a.m.–3 p.m., in the Student Union Apollo Room.

Presented by the Asian/Hispanic/Native American Center, the event will also feature food, fortune telling, traditional games, a Vietnamese flower market, and a special display, demo and sale by the Cox Arboretum Bonsai Society.

Participants can watch stage performances, enjoy Asian treats, learn about the art of bonsai, and have their fortunes told by a tarot card reader or an astrologer. And those who bring their camera can have their picture taken in front of backdrops of the Great Wall and a Vietnamese New Year event—they can go to China and Vietnam without leaving town! Admission is free with a WSU ID, or $5 for the general public.

For more information, contact Mai Nguyen, director, Asian/Hispanic/Native American Center, (937)775-2798, mai.nguyen@wright.edu.
