Wright State Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month
Spanish is widely spoken in more than 30 countries and territories. Approximately 280 million people live in the 20 countries where Spanish is the official language.
In Southwest Ohio, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Hispanic/Latino population increased by almost 34 percent from 2000 to 2005. The total percent change for the entire state of Ohio was roughly 19 percent.
Embracing the increased population of Hispanic/Latinos in the region, Wright State University is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with a variety of educational and cultural activities on campus during September and October.
This year’s Hispanic Month celebration showcases the first annual Hispanic Education and Career Summit, featuring speakers WSU President Dr. David R. Hopkins and Donna Alvarado, chair of the Ohio Board of Regents, on Thursday, Oct. 11 from 6 to 10 p.m. in the Nutter Center Berry Room. The goal of this summit, sponsored by the WSU President’s Office, WSU College of Education and Human Services, WSU Admissions Office, WSU Asian/Hispanic/Native American Center and the League of United Latin American Citizens, is to enhance educational opportunities for Hispanic students and increase Hispanic college enrollment and graduation rates. For more information on the career summit, contact Tony Ortiz, director of athletic training/sports medicine, at tony.ortiz@wright.edu.
Latin Night, Tuesday, Oct. 16, will be hot and spicy from 7 to 11 p.m. in the Apollo Room of the Student Union. The celebration of the diversity of Latino cultures will include a night of fashion, music, dancing and food. There will be a special appearance by the 12-piece Cincinnati Latin band, Salsa Caliente!, Cincinnati’s super-hot Latin band that features musicians from Cincinnati, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Colombia and Peru.
An exhibit in photography and words titled Love, Loss and Longing features work from photographer Juan-Sí González and writer Jeanne Lemkau, Wright State professor of Family Medicine and Community Health. This exhibit, in the Student Union Art Gallery from Saturday, Sept. 15, through Saturday, Oct. 6, displays the struggle of Cuban-Americans visiting family in Cuba due to the U.S. Travel ban. González and Lemkau will speak at the opening reception on Thursday, Sept. 20, from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. in the Pathfinder Lounge of the Student Union.
A complete list of Hispanic Heritage Month events follows. All are free and open to the public. For more information, visit http://www.wright.edu/admin/ahna or contact the Asian/Hispanic/Native American Center at (937) 775-2798.
