Student success in stock market simulation at Wright State

While most people would be happy with a 10 to 12 percent return on their stocks, a group of 12-to 14-year-olds was able to approach 20 percent in the Ohio Stock Market Simulation, which concluded recently through the Center for Economic Education (CEE) at Wright State University.

Students from Triad Middle School in North Lewisburg bested 168 teams, including the winners at the high school level, in turning a $100,000 investment of play money into nearly $118,000 during the 10-week period.

Triad placed first in the middle school division, with Ankeney Middle School in Beavercreek second and Dohron Wilson Middle School in Mechanicsburg third. Wilmington High School edged Oakwood High School at the high school level, with Carroll High School in Dayton coming in third.

The WSU Raj Soin College of Business and Fifth Third Bank sponsored the competition for students in 15 counties throughout west central Ohio. The goal was to interest students in finance and investing.

“Each of the student teams is given $100,000 in play money to invest,” said D. R. Fannin, who directs the CEE. “They develop and manage a portfolio to learn the basic economics of buying and selling through a stock exchange.”

The winning teams received cash prizes at a campus luncheon. Included was a tour of the new MTC Technologies Trading Center, which replicates a Wall Street environment for Wright State business students. Guest speakers at the awards were Mike Kersh of Fifth Third Bank and Fall Ainina, Ph.D., professor and chair of the WSU Department of Finance.
