A night of cultural explorASIAN in the performing arts
Chinese opera combines theater, music, dance, acrobatics and martial arts in a performance with elaborate make-up, masks and exquisite costumes. To conclude Wright State University’s Asian Heritage Month celebration, the Philadelphia Chinese Opera Society will present Journey to the West: The Monkey King, as part of Asian Culture Night on Saturday, May 12, beginning at 7 p.m. in the Student Union Apollo Room on campus.
Written by Wu-Chen-en, Journey to the West is considered one of the four classic novels written during the Ming Dynasty in the 16th century. The story mingles Chinese fables, fairy tales, legends, superstitions, popular beliefs and monster stories. The Beijing artists will perform their “face change” technique, in which they display a rapid change of painted face with a wave of the hand or a turn of the head. Only about 200 artists in the world perform this ancient Chinese art.
“Chinese children grow up with stories of Monkey King Sun Wukong, just as American children grow up with The Wizard of Oz,” said Mai Nguyen, director of the Asian/Hispanic/Native American Center.
Along with the performance, Asian Culture Night will also include:- Traditional folk dances from China, India, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam;
- Story telling from Jonathan and Harold Wright on a 14-year exchange of students between Ohio and Japan titled “Young Lives Blossom in Fields Far Away: Real Life Cross-Cultural Vignettes;”
- A fashion show featuring traditional costumes from China, India, Japan, Korea, Pakistan, Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam;
- The 10th anniversary celebration of the Asian/Hispanic/Native American Center at Wright State.
Admission for Asian Culture Night is $8 for Wright State students, faculty, staff, children ages 5–12, and $10 for the public. For more information or to purchase tickets, contact the Asian/Hispanic/Native American Center at (937) 775-2798 or the Student Union Box Office at (937) 775-2798.
