Portraits, scenes of China comprise art exhibit as part of Asian Heritage Month at Wright State
Paintings by Chinese artist Yan Sun will be on display in the Wright State University Student Union Gallery from April 2 to April 27 as part of Asian Heritage Month at the university.
“Yan Sun Paintings: Traditions—Past and Present” is the theme for the show. Featured will be oil and acrylic portraits and scenes of China that blend contemporary styles and content with ancient images. A lecture by Sun on the nature, content and inspiration for his work is scheduled for Thursday, April 12, at 1:15 p.m. in the Student Union Pathfinder Lounge.
The exhibition and lecture will both be free to the public. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday. The exhibition is sponsored by the Asian/Hispanic/Native American Center at Wright State, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.
Sun is an associate professor of art at Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio, and served as chair of the college art department from 1998 to 2005. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in the fine arts from colleges and universities in China and the U.S. He said his artwork “may not describe a specific story, but rather should attempt to challenge the mind and the soul of the beholder, and direct him or her to reflect upon philosophical ideas about life itself, as well as time and space.”
