WSU celebrates Chinese-Vietnamese New Year
Performers from the Beijing Opera will highlight Wright State University’s celebration of the Chinese and Vietnamese New Year, the “Year of the Boar,” on Monday, Feb. 5, beginning at noon in the Student Union Apollo Room on campus.
The Beijing Opera artists will perform their “face change” technique, in which they display a rapid change of painted face with a wave of the hand or a turn of the head. They will present different roles and masks of Chinese opera. Only about 200 artists in the world perform face change, an ancient Chinese art.
“This year is especially exciting for us because it marks the 40th anniversary of Wright State University and the 10th anniversary of the Asian/Hispanic/Native American Center,” said Mai Nguyen, director of the Asian/Hispanic/Native American Center. “The Beijing Opera uses dance, dialogue, martial arts, elaborate makeup, hair and sumptuous costumes to tell a story. It will be a great cultural experience for all ages.”
The event will also include a colorful and traditional Vietnamese New Year flower market, where guests may enjoy and purchase their favorite flowers. The Asian Student Association will have a souvenir booth with unique items.
Complimentary samples of traditional Chinese and Vietnamese foods will include Chinese dumplings and noodles, Vietnamese spring rolls and New Year’s sweets. Folk dances, music, the traditional and humorous Vietnamese “Kitchen God Report,” games, fortune telling, prizes and more are part of the fun, which continues until 2 p.m.
Admission is free for those with a Wright State ID and $5 for the public. For more information, contact the Asian/Hispanic/Native American Center at (937) 775-2798.
