Music, dance, art, films, culture: WSU celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month
Spanish is the official language of 20 countries. It is widely spoken in more than 30 countries and territories. Spanish ranks fourth in official language population. Approximately 280 million people live in countries where Spanish is the official language.
According to the 2000 census, the Hispanic/Latino population increased from 22.4 million in 1990 to 35.3 million in 2000, or 12.6 percent of the nation’s population. The three largest Hispanic/Latino groups in the United States are Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans and Cuban Americans.
Wright State University is again celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with a variety of educational and cultural activities on campus during September and October. Latin Night, on Tuesday, Oct. 17, will celebrate the diversity of Latino cultures through cultural displays and presentations, music, dancing and food. Free salsa and meringue lessons will also be offered.
The work of artist Joe Ayala will be displayed in the Student Union Art Gallery from Monday, Sept. 25, through Saturday, Oct. 14. His paintings and drawings portray themes of life, death, love, betrayal, passion, history and admiration.
With the United States experiencing a tremendous swell of Latino immigrants, Maria Vidal de Haymes, Ph.D., professor of social work at Loyola University in Chicago, will present “Migration in the Americas,” an overview of migratory flows in the Americas and their impact on family, community and culture. The event is Tuesday, Oct. 10, at 4:10 p.m. in room 116 of the Health Sciences Auditorium.
A complete list of Hispanic Heritage Month events follows. All are free and open to the public. For more information, visit www.wright.edu/admin/ahna or contact the Asian/Hispanic/Native American Center at (937) 775-2798.
