New WSU research center to help businesspeople cut through red tape

Wright State University’s new EDAptive Computing Business Process Management Research Center will help businesspeople caught up in the red tape of institutional bureaucracy to streamline and simplify their processes.

A $3.2 million donation in computer software from EDAptive Computing, Inc. of Dayton will establish the center in the university’s Raj Soin College of Business where students will learn how to do more with less.

Like the nation’s current love affair with organization—and the products that help you get there—Business Process Management (BPM) refers to what businesses do to optimize and adapt their processes. Though organizations have always tried to use BPM in their operations, what’s new today is the existence of software tools that help companies monitor the execution of their business processes.

“The goal is to refine, simplify and automate the process,” explained Vikram Sethi, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Information Systems and Operations Management (ISOM) in the Raj Soin College of Business. He added the new research center would provide college business students with the latest technology in the BPM field and provide research and consulting assistance to Miami Valley businesses wanting to optimize their business processes.

Sethi said the EDAptive Computing software would help both undergraduate and graduate students to have a better understanding of how good business process management helps an organization succeed.

“Our goal is to produce graduates who are well equipped to impact the bottom line,” he said.

The business community will also benefit through the creation of a central repository of knowledge and expertise in business process management that Miami Valley organizations can use to better monitor and optimize their processes. Among the competitive advantages an organization achieves through business process management are lower costs, better customer service and faster time to market.

“This center will greatly enhance our teaching mission at the Raj Soin College of Business and provide a research agenda to expand the theory of business process management,” said Berkwood Farmer, Ph.D., dean of the college.

“We are looking forward to collaborating with Wright State researchers to advance the state of the art in BPM by leveraging our innovative software products and methods,” said Praveen Chawla, Ph.D., CEO of EDAptive Computing, Inc.

“We hope that our donation will lead to sustained high value jobs in the area as a result of leading-edge research and education in BPM,” added Anju Chawla, COO of EDAptive Computing, Inc.

EDAptive Computing is a research and development consulting company founded in Dayton in 1997. Its mission is to produce software products that help its customers become more profitable, efficient and competitive by decreasing the time and money spent to design and sustain complex computer systems. Their clients are primarily the military and aerospace, and they work closely with Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The firm is an active member of the college’s ISOM advisory board.
