Human resources club at Wright State named among best in nation
It was an active year for the Wright State University student chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM).
The 30 members developed a networking experience with society chapters in the Miami Valley and Springfield and participated in an internship program. They also spent a day shadowing area human resource professionals and contributed to the community by donating clothing to the Clothes That Work program, which helps applicants prepare for job interviews.
For their success in these projects, and several other activities, the WSU Raj Soin College of Business chapter was selected among the top 10 in the nation for 2006 in competition with 430 SHRM student chapters. This is the second consecutive year the Wright State students placed in the nationwide top 10 and the fourth consecutive year they received a superior or higher rating.
Lyndsey Nissley, chapter president who just graduated with a degree in human resource management, said the success of the club reflected the dedication and hard work of the students and support from the administration and faculty at the Raj Soin College of Business. Other chapter officers included Jodi Hall, vice president, and Christie Spreng, secretary. Lisa Crawford, a lecturer in management, is advisor to the club.
Chapter projects that led to the national award included success in the four broad areas of professional operation of the chapter, professional development of members, support of the profession and partnerships with SHRM. The national organization doesn’t rank the top 10 student chapters but told Nissley the Wright State group achieved the highest score possible for their success in the four key areas.
In addition to the activities mentioned above, the students hosted a regional SHRM official for a club meeting, toured human resource departments of several public and private organizations, volunteered to help a human resource lecture series at the college, developed a resume book for human resource students to share with employers for possible internship and career employment and assisted local small businesses as volunteers in human resource management.
