Lucrative internship for two WSU students working with defense-related agencies

Like many Americans, Dan Johnson is concerned about the effects of terrorism on this country’s defense system. But unlike many Americans, Johnson is in a position this summer to act on his concern through an internship with a defense-related agency.

Johnson and fellow Wright State University Raj Soin College of Business student Danielle Thompson were selected as two of 85 nationwide participants for the prestigious Norm Mineta Internship Program in Washington, D.C. More than 400 applicants sought the 10-week positions.

The internship, named after the U.S. Secretary of Transportation, covers all the program fees, housing and weekly expenses and is valued at more than $8,000 per student.

The program is funded by Congress for interns interested in national defense to work with defense-related agencies. Students selected must be from economically disadvantaged backgrounds or receive financial aid.

“I am interested in working in national defense because I see it as more crucial than ever to the well-being of our country,” said Johnson, a senior management major from Beavercreek who is working with the Army’s Personnel Command. “At this point in our history, globalization is drastically changing the playing field and introducing new players in world commerce,” he said. “And with terrorism on the rise there are more and more threats to our nation and freedom.”

Thompson, a senior marking major from Cincinnati, is serving as a planning intern with the Defense Logistics Agency.

The program is administered through the Washington Center, an educational nonprofit organization, and includes the internship, small discussion groups, various lecture series events, academic course work and special briefings and activities. The goal is to provide the students with experience that will qualify them for a future career in the defense field.

Johnson’s internship includes helping organize Department of the Army events dealing with leadership training and recognizing outstanding personnel.

Mineta served as the first Asian-American cabinet member in U.S. history when he served as Secretary of Commerce in the Clinton administration. His current appointment in the Bush administration makes him the only Cabinet member in history to go directly from a Democratic to Republican administration.
