WSU partners with new agency to provide education assistance to residents plagued with financial woes
Rising consumer debt, deceptive lending practices and low savings rates are growing both locally and nationally. Ohio and the Dayton region rank among the highest in the nation in home foreclosures. Americans carry an average credit card debt exceeding $8,500, and 1.3 million credit card holders declared bankruptcy last year.
To help low and moderate income residents cope with these challenges, the Federal Reserve Bank has joined forces with private sector financial institutions, the Community Reinvestment Institute Alumni Association (CRIAA), Wright State University Raj Soin College of Business and area nonprofits to create the Financial Education Partnership of the Miami Valley (FEPMV).
“CRIAA and the Federal Reserve Bank brought several community-based nonprofit organizations and educational institutions together, and the result of that collaborative effort is FEPMV,” said David Dewberry, CRIAA vice president and FEPMV committee chair. He said the partnership was created to provide financial education and to enrich the quality of life for residents in Montgomery, Greene, Clark, Warren, Miami, Shelby, Clinton, Preble and Darke Counties.
The WSU Raj Soin College of Business partnered with FEPMV to develop the Web site http://www.fepmv.org and compiled a directory of partnership members.
Fall Ainina, Ph.D., chair of the WSU Department of Finance and Financial Services that created the Web site and prepared the directory, described the Web site as “a resource guide for finding assistance with basic money management or resolving a difficult financial situation.” He said information in the directory, available online through the Web site, can help individuals with savings, first-time home ownership and basic money management, either directly or through an agency that can provide assistance.
The FEPMV members include the Center for Economic Education at WSU, Citywide Mortgage Credit Counseling, Community Action Partnership, CRIAA, Consumer Credit Counseling Service of the Miami Valley, County Corp., Greene County Department of Development, Greene County Career Center, Homeownership Center of Greater Dayton, Huntington Bank, Ohio State University Extension Offices in the nine counties, Oikos Community Development Corporation, USDA Rural Development and the Wright Financial Path at Wright State.
