Student success in stock market simulation at Wright State
With nearly a 33 percent return on investment, students from Catholic Central High School in Springfield bested 220 teams in the Ohio Stock Market Simulation that concluded recently through the Center for Economic Education (CEE) at Wright State University.
Catholic Central teams placed first and second in the high school division. Greenon High School in Springfield placed third.
In the fourth to eighth grade competition, St. Rita Catholic School of Dayton won and teams from Ankeny Middle School of Beavercreek placed second and third.
The WSU Raj Soin College of Business and James Investment Research sponsored the competition for students in 15 counties throughout West Central Ohio. The goal was to interest students in finance and investing through a 10-week program.
“Each of the student teams is given $100,000 in play money to invest,” said D.R. Fannin, who directs the CEE. “They develop and manage a portfolio to learn the basic economics of buying and selling through a stock exchange.”
The winning teams received cash prizes at a campus luncheon. Included was a tour of the new MTC Technologies Trading Center that replicates a Wall Street environment for Wright State business students. Guest speakers at the awards were Tom Mangan of James Investment Research and Fall Ainina, Ph.D., professor and chair of the WSU Department of Finance.
