Human resources: fair or foul?
In his article “Why We Hate HR,” in the August 2005 issue of Fast Company magazine, writer Keith Hammonds offered a scathing critique of the human resources profession as practiced in some organizations. Hammonds described human resources departments as “at best, a necessary evil, and at worst, a dark bureaucratic force that blindly enforces nonsensical rules, resists creativity and impedes constructive change.”
Hammonds’ article no doubt hit a nerve with many in the human resources profession. The article continues to make waves nearly a year after its initial publication.
A panel of local human resources executives will share their views on the merits of Hammonds’ article and discuss the long-term implications to the profession during “Fair or Foul: A One-Year Retrospective on ‘Why We Hate HR’” on Wednesday, May 10, from 8 to 9:30 a.m. in the Berry Room of the Ervin J. Nutter Center at Wright State University. The event is part of the Contemporary Issues in Human Resources Lecture Series sponsored by the Department of Management in Wright State’s Raj Soin College of Business and Right Management Consultants.
Moderating the panel is Gary Moyer, vice president for consulting services at Right Management Consultants. The panel, representing some of the region’s largest employers, includes Leighanne Baker, vice president, human resources for The Reynolds and Reynolds Company; John Beatty, vice president for administration at Robbins and Myers, Inc; and Daniel McCabe, vice president, global strategy and operations, service management at NCR Corporation.
Breakfast will be available beginning at 7:30 a.m. Reservations are requested to jeannecornor@yahoo.com by Friday, May 5. Visit www.wright.edu/coba/acad/management/hrlecture/mgtseries.htm for more information.
