Chinese immigration drama, improv comedy highlight Wright State Asian Culture Night

Between 1910 and 1940, Chinese immigrants were detained at the Angel Island Immigration Station in California. While there, the detainees carved poems into the wooden barrack walls that told of fear, opportunity, loneliness, retribution and other emotions that they felt while trying to start a new life in America.

Through dance, music and multimedia, the Facing East Dance and Music company will explore the lives and emotions of Chinese immigrants when they present Held So Close: Remembering the Poets of Angel Island, as part of Wright State University’s Asian Culture Night celebration on Saturday, April 22, at 7 p.m. in the Student Union Apollo Room on campus.

“This is a poetic and passionate show that is not only thought provoking, but allows you to feel the emotions of those detained on Angel Island,” said Mai Nguyen, director of Wright State’s Asian/Hispanic/Native American Center. “The show complements the exhibit ‘Gateway to Gold Mountain: The Angel Island Experience,’ that is on display in the Paul Laurence Dunbar Library through the end of June.”

The Held So Close performance includes dance, martial arts, poetry, references to Chinese classical literature and mythology and more to represent strength in the face of adversity. A public reception to meet the cast will be held prior to the performance at 5 p.m. in the Endeavour Room, E156C Student Union.

Combine Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Filipino and Korean culture with a pound of sketch and a dash of improv and the result is Stir-Friday Night!, Chicago’s premier Asian American sketch comedy and improv troupe. This hilarious and thought provoking troupe performs comedic sketches that bring the Asian American experience to light while making audiences roll with laughter. The Chicago Reader calls Stir-Friday Night! “sharp, intelligent, and wickedly funny with the speed and grace of Second City.”

Asian Culture Night will also include traditional folk dances and a fashion show representing several Asian countries. Tickets are $6 in advance and $10 at the door. For tickets and more information, contact the Asian/Hispanic/Native American Center at (937) 775-2798 or the Student Union Box Office at (937) 775-5544.
