WSU students revamp CountyCorp Web site as part of business assistance program

CountyCorp, the private non-profit development corporation created to improve housing and economic opportunities for residents in Montgomery County and beyond, needed a new Web site. Theirs was outdated and lacked the necessary information to make it effective. Now, thanks to the efforts of Wright State University business students, an expanded and renovated Web site, http://www.countycorp.com, is bringing increased recognition and business for the agency.

Area small businesses can now take advantage of this free service through the Student Team Assistance project developed by the Ohio Small Business Development Center and the Department of Information Systems and Operations Management in the WSU Raj Soin College of Business. Students work with small businesses in the Miami Valley who need help in such areas as writing a business plan, software development feasibility studies, or, in the case of CountyCorp, designing a Web site.

“We have limited resources and staff time to improve our Web site, and the Wright State students totally revamped and reorganized the material,” said Deb Wenig, director of communications and resource development for CountyCorp. “The students started with a new template and used their knowledge and creativity to work with us in a timely manner to totally reorganize the Web site to meet the needs of our clients,” she explained.

Chris Blake, a senior majoring in management information systems, worked on the CountyCorp project. “This project gave me hands-on experience in dealing with management in an actual business environment that you could never replicate in the classroom,” he said. “I learned that the most important aspect of achieving success is how you interact with the client.”

The student teams work with small businesses to develop a plan that covers marketing, finances, staffing and other aspects of growing an existing business or starting a new one. Student teams have developed menu-driven database systems using Microsoft Access for applications, including inventory, sales and customer management. They also have installed personal computer applications such as QuickBooks Accounting package, performed initial setup of the company’s chart of accounts, and provided hands-on training.

The next deadline for applying for a project is Friday, March 10. For an application or for more information, contact Mike Bodey, center director for the Ohio Small Business Development Center in the Raj Soin College of Business at Wright State, at michael.bodey@wright.edu or (937) 775-3487.
