Wright State Human Resources Lecture Series to discuss dealing with difficult employees

How to best deal with difficult people in a business—whether it be a boss, subordinate, colleague or customer—and the difficult situations businesses face is the topic of the next Contemporary Issues in Human Resources lecture sponsored by the Raj Soin College of Business at Wright State University and Right Management Consultants. Richard Sears, Psy.D., MBA, and fellow at the Yellow Springs Psychological Center, will present “Tough Issues, Tough People: Strategies for Dealing with the Difficult Employee” on Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 8 a.m. in the Nutter Center Berry Room on campus. Breakfast will be served at 7:30 a.m.

Sears holds Wright State graduate degrees in both business and clinical psychology. He co-authored Consultation Skills for Mental Health Professionals along with John Rudisill, dean of Wright State’s School of Professional Psychology and Carrie Mason-Sears, psychologist for the Community Integrated Training and Education program of the Resident Home Corporation in Cincinnati.

As a fellow of the Yellow Springs Psychological Center, Sears conducts therapy and psychological assessments for individuals, couples and families for a wide variety of presenting issues. He consults individuals, businesses and non-profit agencies on a variety of topics, including strategic and tactical business planning, training and development workshops, mental health issues in the workplace, stress reduction and change management. Sears speaks and presents seminars on communication skills, dealing with difficult employees and co-workers, diversity and many others.

While a Wright State student, Sears was asked why he chose to study both business and psychology.

“Business is very much involved with psychology,” he said. “How do you get a customer to want your product? How do you get along with your employees? How do you motivate your employees to do a good job?”

In addition to his business consulting and clinical experience, Sears is a fourth degree black belt in Ninjutsu, a licensed private pilot and once served as a bodyguard for the Dalai Lama of Tibet.

Reservations are required by Thursday, Feb. 16. Contact Jeanne Cornor at jeannecornor@yahoo.com or call the Department of Management in the Raj Soin College of Business at (937) 775-2559.
