Winning teams announced by WSU in Ohio stock market simulation competition
With a 33 percent return on investment, students from Tri-Village in New Madison bested 133 teams in the Ohio Stock Market Simulation that concluded recently through the Center for Economic Education (CEE) at Wright State University.
Tri-Village teams lead the way by placing first and third in the high school division, with Central Middle School in Xenia finishing first and second in the fourth to eighth grade division.
The WSU Raj Soin College of Business and James Investment Research sponsored the competition for students in 15 counties throughout West Central Ohio. The goal was to interest students in finance and investing through a 10-week program.
“Each of the teams in the competition is given $100,000 in play money to invest,” explained D.R. Fannin, who directs the CEE. “They conduct research on prospective companies and learn the basic economics of buying and selling through a stock exchange while developing and managing their portfolio.”
The winning student teams were honored recently at a luncheon held at the college’s new MTC Technologies Trading Center. First place was worth $150, with $100 for second and $50 for third.
At the award ceremonies, the guest speakers were Tom Mangan from James Investment Research and Fall Ainina, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Wright State University Department of Finance. The students also toured the new MTC Center, which replicates a Wall Street stock market trading environment for WSU business students.
