Major national, regional accounting leaders commit to long-term mentoring of WSU business students

The top national and regional accounting firms will lead the way to provide mentors for high achieving students through an innovative Wright State University Raj Soin College of Business accounting leadership program (ALP) that will begin next fall.

ALP will feature significant involvement from national and regional accounting leaders including Deloitte & Touche, Ernst & Young, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Brady Ware, Flagel, Huber, Flagel, Battelle & Battelle and other segments of private industry.

“This program is designed to develop future leaders within both the accounting profession and the business community,” explained James Greenspan, Ph.D., chair of the WSU accounting department. “Students should be exposed to leadership models, issues and real-world organizational environments where leadership is so critically needed and practiced. We believe ALP will be highly beneficial to participants and employers because it will further enhance the reputation and strength of our accounting program, attract and maintain more students and provide top quality talent to the local and regional business community.”

A business professional will serve as a mentor to provide professional guidance as the students develop their business careers throughout their four years. In addition to this mentoring, ALP students will participate in an extra curricular services project each year. And during their junior year they will complete a real-world business project under the guidance of a professional from either a CPA firm or private industry that will require use of leadership and organizational skills within the company.

“We are the only university in Ohio to offer this combination of opportunities for the students, along with the active participation of the business community,” said Greenspan.

He said ALP is designed for high achievers. Students from underrepresented populations will be particularly targeted.

The initial group of 20 to 25 freshmen students who are specially selected for the program also will receive instruction at an accelerated pace in special sections of existing business courses. These classes will incorporate a strong presence from business professionals talking about critical aspects of business leadership.

Initial funding was provided through a $25,000 gift from Robert and Jamie King. Jamie King is CEO of Crowe Manufacturing, a member of the WSU Board of Trustees and a 1980 Wright State graduate.

Students who participate will receive a $1,000 scholarship annually but must meet select requirements that include higher admission standards and required levels of academic achievement.

The accountancy department is one of Wright State’s most respected academic units. Students regularly win top awards in national competition, and its record of internship opportunities and job placement for graduates has earned the praise of business leaders in the Miami Valley and beyond. Of the 482 universities worldwide who are accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, only about 30 percent (including Wright State) meet the additional requirements for separate accounting accreditation.
