Wright State hosts Multicultural Halloween Celebration
Many of the world’s fall holidays, including the Asian Indian Diwali, the Chinese and Vietnamese Mid-Autumn Festival, the Korea Chusok, the Japanese Bon Holiday, the Nigerian Yam Festival, the Mexican Day of the Dead and the Native American Fall Harvest, will be celebrated during Wright State University’s sixth annual Multicultural Halloween Celebration. The event is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 27, from 5:30 to 10 p.m. in the Student Union Apollo Room on campus. The event is free for Wright State students, faculty and staff and children 12 and younger. The cost is $5 for the general public.
Sponsored by several Wright State student organizations, the celebration will offer free ethnic foods from around the world, a costume contest for children and adults, cultural displays, arts and crafts, tarot and palm reading, face painting, prizes and much more. Music and dance from Scotland, France, the Caribbean, Japan, China, Africa, Ireland, Lebanon, the United States and others will be performed.
“It makes me very happy to be able to help build and mold something that all cultures and ethnicities can enjoy,” said Scott Patton, a Wright State student and chair of the Multicultural Halloween Celebration committee. “We are all raised in different areas, come from different families, and have different cultural experiences, and the Multicultural Halloween Celebration is an opportunity to get together and share those things. I encourage people to come and experience the different types of food and entertainment, but the bigger message is the message of peace and cultural pride.”
Sponsoring the event are Wright State’s Asian/Hispanic/Native American Center, Asian/Hispanic/Native American Council, Asian Student Association, Black Student Union, Association of Native American Students, Latinos Involved in Further Education, and the University Activities Board.
