WSU to host play, author of Platanos & Collard Greens
As part of its Hispanic Heritage Month celebration, Wright State University will host a production of the play Platanos & Collard Greens along with a presentation by David Lamb, writer, producer, Hip Hop scholar and author of the play. Lamb’s presentation is Monday, Oct. 10, at 12:15 p.m. in the Discovery Room, E163 Student Union. The play will be presented at 7 p.m. that evening in the Student Union Apollo Room.
Based on Lamb’s book Do Platanos Go Wit’ Collard Greens?, the play tells the story of two college students, Freeman, an African American man and Angelita, a Latino woman, who are forced to confront and overcome cultural and racial prejudices while defending their bond from the biases held by family and friends.
Platanos & Collard Greens addresses stereotypes, prejudices and urban myths that exist between African Americans and Latinos, within the context of Hip Hop, humor and satire. The play encourages the audience to evaluate these pervasive stereotypes.
Lamb’s presentation Do Platanos Go Wit’ Collard Greens? will explore the relationships between African Americans and Latinos raised in the play. Lamb, who currently teaches society and Hip Hop culture at John Jay College in New York, earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Hunter College, attended New York University to study law and earned a master’s degree in public affairs from Princeton University.
Lamb’s lecture is free and open to the public. Admission to the play is free for Wright State students, faculty and staff with university ID and $5 for the general public. Both events are sponsored by the Asian/Hispanic/Native American Center, Bolinga Black Cultural Resources Center, and Women’s Center.
