Wright State University celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month
In September and October, Wright State University, through its Asian/Hispanic/Native American Center, is sponsoring a variety of colorful, fun and informative events in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Events include an art exhibit titled “America Before Amerigo,” Latin Night, a live concert from Ronstadt, Ramirez and the Santa Cruz River Band, theatre, films, speakers and more.
“America Before Amerigo” features paintings of imaginary beasts and beings by Chilean artist Ana Videla Lira, from Monday, Sept. 26, to Thursday, Oct. 20, in the Student Union Art Gallery. The exhibit is based on visions of pre-Colombian America, from meso-America to Chile and its original people. An opening reception for the exhibit is Monday, Oct. 3, in the Student Union Lounge from noon to 1 p.m.
The romantic comedy play Platanos and Collard Greens scripted by David Lamb, a novelist and professor of society and hip-hop culture at John Jay College in New York, will be performed in the Student Union Multipurpose Room on Monday, Oct. 10, from 7 to 9 p.m. The play is a story about a black man and a Latina who are forced to defend their love against the cultural and racial prejudices of their families and friends. In addition, Lamb will also present the lecture “Do Platanos Go Wit’ Collard Greens?” to explore the relationships between African-Americans and Latinos. The lecture is also on Monday, Oct. 10, in the Discovery Room, E163 Student Union, from 12:15 to 1:20 p.m.
Latin Night on Tuesday, Oct. 11, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. in the Endeavour Room, E156 Student Union, will celebrate the diversity of Latino culture through beautiful music, dances, food and friendship. Free salsa and merengue lessons are available for all levels.
Michael Ronstadt and Ted Ramirez, principal writers and artists of the Ronstadt, Ramirez and the Santa Cruz River Band, will present on American Indian, Spanish, Mexican and American Cowboy heritage and culture in their lecture titled “Southwestern Folk Music and Its Mexican/Hispanic Roots.” Their lecture on Thursday, Oct. 13, from 12:20 to 1:20 p.m. in the Discovery Room, E163 Student Union, will precede a live concert later in the evening at 7 p.m., in the Creative Arts Center Concert Hall. Admission for the concert is free with a Wright State ID and $5 for the general public.
