Six Wright State social workers receive district honors Wright State faculty, staff and students representing the social work field comprised an overwhelming majority of honors presented at an awards banquet sponsored by Region 7 of the Ohio Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers last March. Of the eight honorees, six were from Wright State. The awards recognize individuals in the social work profession who exemplify outstanding leadership, advocacy for clients, program development and research. (05/01/2008)
Wright State’s Tony Ortiz Named Distinguished Hispanic Ohioan Tony Ortiz, Wright State University's director of athletic training and sports medicine, was honored last month by the Ohio Commission on Hispanic/Latino Affairs as one of 10 Distinguished Hispanic Ohioans at the organization's gala in Columbus. Ohio Civil Rights Commission hearing to be held The Ohio Civil Rights Commission will conduct a hearing from 10 a.m. to noon, May 22, at Wright State University. The claimant in this case is appealing a commission ruling on an earlier employment discrimination claim. The public is invited to the session in the university’s Student Union, Room E163 A and B.

Wright State summer camp connects girls with engineering The second annual Girls Ready to Explore Engineering Now (GREEN) Program at Wright State University is an opportunity for female students in 7th, 8th and 9th grades to experience the world of engineering through hands-on activities. Wright State’s International Friendship Affair celebrates Summer Olympics in China Your passport to the sights, sounds and tastes of 68 countries from around the world is Wright State University’s 24th annual International Friendship Affair (IFA) on Saturday, April 19, 2008, 1–6 p.m. in the university’s Student Union Apollo Room. This year’s event, “Sports, Games and Recreation Around the World,” commemorates the Summer Olympics in China. (04/15/2008)
Wright State’s Lecture Series discusses keeping employees engaged It goes without saying that engaged employees outperform their less-involved peers, and are more likely to believe that their efforts can positively affect customer service. Engaged workers are also less likely to leave the organization or have an on-the-job accident. All this translates to a dramatic difference in bottom line results: firms with the highest engagement levels are as much as 50 percent more profitable than their lower-engagement counterparts. Yet, a recent Gallup report shows that only 29 percent of employees consider themselves highly engaged. (04/15/2008)

Wright State’s Asian Culture Night features chorus from China As the cherry blossoms bloom in Washington, D.C., and China prepares for the summer Olympics in Beijing, Wright State University kicks off its celebration of Asian Heritage Month with Asian Culture Night. Come and experience a night of cultural “explorASIAN” through the performing arts on Saturday, April 12, 2008, at 7:00 p.m. in the Student Union Apollo Room. The event is part of the university’s 2008 Asian Heritage Month celebration, which also includes various lectures, art exhibits and films celebrating Asian culture and heritage. (04/09/2008)
Wright State filmmakers honored for lasting contribution to the fight against cancer Wright State filmmakers Julia Reichert and Steven Bognar, who spent six years producing the acclaimed film A Lion in the House, received the prestigious Susan Matsuko Shinagawa LIVESTRONG Cancer Control Leadership Award at a ceremony today during the 11th Biennial Symposium on Minorities, The Medically Underserved & Cancer, hosted by the Intercultural Cancer Council (ICC) in Washington, D.C. International flight enthusiasts and scholars convene at Wright State In 1908, just five years after making their first, short pioneering flights, the Wright brothers introduced their invention to the world with spectacular demonstrations in the United States and France. One hundred years later, flight enthusiasts and scholars from around the world will convene May 8–10 at Wright State University’s Student Union for the “International Community of Flight: A Centennial History” conference.
