Raj Soin College of Business and School of Medicine Win President's Award for Outstanding Collaborative Units

In 2001, representatives of the School of Medicine and the Raj Soin College of Business met to discuss the regional need to offer health care providers and administrators with master's-level, health care focused management and business education. Though either entity could have created an educational program on their own, they agreed to jointly develop and offer a certificate program in health care management. Creating a program that took advantage of the strengths of each unit resulted in an applied curriculum consisting of four courses stressing advanced business concepts and emphasizing real-world applications in health care. The format was designed to meet the needs of busy health care executives.

"The organizers thought of everything for the busy professional returning to the classroom," said James Ebert, associate professor of community health and a participant in the certificate program. "They picked a location easily accessible to major highways with convenient parking. Knowing that time for participants would be tight, they arranged a carry-in dinner for each session. Textbooks and handouts for instruction were included in the cost of the program and provided on site, saving participants a trip to the University Bookstore."

"This applied educational program develops health care executives by emphasizing knowledge and development of skills in management, health economics, health care finance, systems thinking, and leadership," said John McAlearney, assistant professor of community health in the School of Medicine and the Raj Soin College of Business. "We're very pleased with the success and recognition this program has received."
