Can Exceptional Management Be Predicted? The HR Chally Group Says It Can!
 |
Howard Stevens, chairman and CEO of the HR Chally Group, explained how his company helps its clients identify successful sales professionals and exceptional managers at the first HR Lecture in the 2004-2005 series sponsored by Right Management Consultants and the Raj Soin College of Business.
Stevens company provides personnel assessment and research services to over 2,500 customers in 35 countries. Stevens is the author of Identifying and Selecting Exceptional Managers, Selling the Wheel, The Quadrant Solution (published in thirteen languages), and several other books. He has been a guest on CNN, Bloombeg, USA, National Public Radio, Radio Free America, and other business programs.
By evaluating employees and ensuring that they are placed in the right role, success can be predicted, according to Stevens. He bases his conclusion on a five-year study, completed and published in Identifying and Developing Exceptional Managers. The study compares the career progress of high-potential employees who were actively developed through the four stages of management maturity versus high-potentials left to their own devices. The Chally research also identifies and validates competencies that predict management success.
Stevens emphasized that employee development must be monitored and managed like any other function. Direct intervention does make a difference as long as managers are matched with the right corporate roles, according to Stevens.
Success also depends on individuals moving through the four stages of management maturity including responsibility, prioritization, delegation, and leadership while mastering seven critical skills during each phase. Critical skills include developing an overview, creating a vision, self-assessment, and selecting champions along with the leadership skills of focus, communication, and motivating others.
Besides directing the first long-term study of critical success factors for executive development for the United States Department of Defense and creating the largest statistical database for the evaluation of executives and sales positions, Chally is an avid fan and supporter of Wright States performing arts programs.
