2008-2009 Play Dates:
Fall Game: October 6 – December 12, 2008
Winter/Spring Game:  February 9 – April 17, 2009 (DATES UPDATED)

The Ohio Stock Market Game is an online educational program that serves as an excellent introduction to the financial markets. This online simulation teaches students at intermediate, middle, and high school level about investments, research, and risk by using a “real time” stock and mutual fund trading system.

So many Americans go through life never learning the facts about the stock market. This educational tool will get students involved in learning about the stock market, and, at the same time, teach them the basic essentials for becoming more aware citizens in the decades ahead.

Economic understanding is for everyone -- let's pass it on.  Play the Ohio Stock Market Simulation!!

What Is It?  The Ohio Stock Market Game is designed to involve students in the world of finance and investing. Teachers and students begin with a simulated $100,000 portfolio which they manage over the course of a 10-week competition. The Ohio SMG is being used in hundreds of classrooms as an excellent learning tool for students in grades 4-12.

Curriculum Integration.  The Ohio SMG helps teach and reinforce state and national curriculum standards in math, social studies, economics, technology and business. Each teacher structures the game to fit their classroom needs. Students learn about the role of today’s market in our economy, and are placed in decision-making roles that require research, judgment, analysis, mathematical ability and collaborative work.  All materials needed to play are available online or you can call Kimberly Moon at the Economics Center for Education & Research at 513-556-8545 for personal instruction.

Playing the Simulation.  Classes are typically divided into teams of 4-5 students.  Each team receives $100,000 funds to “trade” common stocks on the New York, American and NASDAQ exchanges.  Each team is allowed a limited number of transactions, over a 10-week period, and can choose to buy or sell shares based on both quantitative and qualitative evaluations of companies and corresponding stocks from a variety of sources.  Stock trades made during market hours (9:30 am to 4:00 pm) will receive 20-minute delayed prices.  Trades made after the markets close will receive the next business day’s opening price.  Daily portfolio results are available online.  Rankings include all teams in the Dayton Region, separated by divisions of high school and grades 4 to 8.

Rewards.  The top three winning teams (those with the highest portfolio value at game’s end) of each division will be invited to a celebratory luncheon to be held on the Wright State University campus within a few weeks of simulation end.  Each team will be introduced. The team captain should be prepared to present a brief overview of their team’s winning strategy, at which time each team member will receive an award certificate.  In addition, the top three winning teams in each division will receive a monetary award according to their ranking. First place winners receive $100, with $75 for second place and $50 for the third place winners.

Pricing and Registration.  The cost to play is $20 per team of 4-5 students. Register online at www.stockmarketgame.org, click on Registration button.
