UNIX Systems
CaTS System Services maintains over 40 UNIX systems in
the Library Annex. There are many general purpose UNIX systems that all
students, faculty, and staff can access
and there are some special function systems
for dedicated services.
Main Application Server
The main general purpose UNIX system is a Sun Sparc
Enterprise E-250 with:
- 2048 Megabytes of memory
- 45 Gigabytes of fiber-optic RAID 5 disk storage
- 2 400 MHz CPUs
- over 20,000 user accounts
- Solaris operating system
This system has many applications such as Matlab,
Mathematica, Word Perfect, SAS, spss, email programs, compilers, and many
other public domain tools that are used by people throughout the university.
University Mail Server
The university mail server is a SunFire v490 with:
- 16 GigaBytes of memory
- Over 600 Gigabytes of fiber-optic RAID 5
disk storage
- 8 1500 MHz CPUs
- Solaris Operating System
This
system delivers approximately 90,000 mail messages per day to and from all
university clients. It also serves those messages to all university mail
clients using email programs such as Pine, Mac OSX Mail, and Netscape Mail, as well as to our web-based email accessible through our WINGS portal.
Near the mail server is an
Enterprise-450 system used for account generation, helpdesk programs, and
serving all of the user home directories to the application servers.
This system is also used for authentication for modem and
other access.
University Web Server
The university web server is a Sparc Enterprise E-250 with:
- 2048 Megabytes of memory
- 26 Gigabytes of fiber-optic RAID 5 disk storage
- 2 - 400 MHz CPU's
- Solaris Operating System
This system is Wright
State University's primary presence on the World Wide Web. Some departments
run their own web servers, but this is the primary web server for WSU to
communicate with the community, as well as to promote WSU to prospective
students.
Special/Dedicated Function UNIX systems
There are several dedicated UNIX systems with the following
functions:
- A group of servers that host our Banner implementation
- A group of servers that host our Campus portal (WINGS)
- An Oracle / IS applications server
- An Oracle Database server
- A proxy server
- The Campus Firewall
- A Distance Learning Server that we maintain for the Center for Teaching & Learning
- Backup servers to be brought online quickly if needed
- Several systems for testing major changes before applying them to the production environment
