Storage and Backup
Systems Services maintains several storage options
for our servers, including two different Raid Storage systems and an
automated tape library.

Hitachi TagmaStore USP 100 Storage Subsystem
Brand-new in the summer of 2006, the Hitachi TagmaStore USP 100 Storage Subsystem is replacing our Hitachi 9960 RAID Storage, as well as the EMC RAID Storage. It was initially installed with 5 TeraBytes of fibre channel disk configured with RAID 5, 16GB cache and 32 fibre channel ports (2GB speed). As of late-summer 2006, we are in the process of migrating all data from the Hitachi 9960 and EMC storage to this new hardware.
Hitachi AMS 1000 Storage Subsystem
Also brand-new in the summer of 2006, the Hitachi AMS 1000 Storage Subsystem 6TB of fibre channel disk, 6TB of SATA disk, 8GB cache and 8 fibre channel ports (2GB speed), and is currently virtualized behind the USP 100 using 8 FC connections between the two arrays.
Hitachi 9960 Raid Storage Subsystem
The Hitachi 9960 RAID Storage subsystem is currently in the process of being phased out and replaced by the above-mentioned hardware. Once it is decommissioned, it will be moved to an off-campus site for use in disaster-recovery, just in case our computer room on-campus is ever knocked out of commission.
EMC RAID Storage
The EMC 5500 RAID Storage system is also currently in the process of being phased out, with its data being migrated to the new storage system.
Automated Tape Library
Installed during Summer Quarter, 2002, our tape-backup needs are handled by a StorageTek 9310 Powderhorn Automated Tape Library (ATL). This is a major improvement over our old ATL, with a capacity to hold 5,000+ tapes, each tape having a capacity of 20 GB. The ATL is used for long-term backup of files, in case of accidental deletion, or for disaster recovery. For recovery from really big disasters, we regularly move some of our backup tapes to an off-site location to allow us to recover in case we lose the entire computer room.
Storage Area Network (SAN)
Storage Area Network (SAN) is the latest storage technology managed by CaTS Systems Services. The servers in our computer room are connected to the Storage Area Network (SAN) through the use of Brocade Silkworm 3800 and 4100 FC switches which are in turn all attached to the USP 100 storage array.
