Wireless Access versus Wired Access
on
Wright State's Network
Wireless access provides easy and convenient connectivity to Wright State's local area network. Users are not bound to a given location and can roam with their laptops freely within the range of the access point. However, there are some facts that you should be aware of. Wireless networks offer convenience but the connection speed is slower compared to a hard wired network connection. The connection speed for the 802.11b standard is 11 mega bits per second compared with 100 mega bits per second on a hard wired connection. In addition, the total bandwidth available (the amount of network traffic the access point can handle) is also limited. What this means is that as more and more users connect to a single access point, less and less bandwidth is available for each user. You share the available bandwidth.
If you experience uneven network performance on the wireless network, it may be due to many users connecting at the same time to one access point. If this happens and you are in your residence hall room, connection to our network using an Ethernet cable should provide you with a much faster connection.
