Installing Your Windows 98 PC

This document details the procedures necessary to connect your PC to the Wright State Residence Network. Please review this document to ensure you thoroughly understand the install procedures.

Responsibility for any repercussions from installation of any downloaded software is yours solely. Wright State University makes no claim for the stability or functionality of this software. Support is your responsibility. We advise caution before proceeding.


I. System Requirements

Does you computer meet Wright State's minimum requirements?
Click System Requirements to find out what you need to connect on campus.

II. Installation Procedures

A. If needed, install the network card.

B. Install the TCP/IP network protocol:

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Highlight Settings.
  3. Click Control Panel. The control panel will open.
  4. Double-click the Network icon. The Network control panel window will open.
  5. In the box that says The following network components are installed, click the TCP/IP item that is followed with the name of your network card.
  6. Click the Properties button. The Properties window will appear.
  7. Click the tab labelled IP Address and then put a check next to Obtain IP Address automatically.
  8. Click the Wins Configuration tab and then put a check next to Disable Wins Resolution.
  9. Click the Gateway tab and then make sure all the fields are blank.
  10. Click the DNS Configuration tab and then put a check next to Disable DNS.
  11. Click the OK button. You may be prompted for your operating system disk. If so, follow the onscreen instructions.
  12. If you are asked to restart your computer, click Yes.
 

C. Install Telnet and FTP.

  1. From a CaTS lab, download the Residence Network install file to a blank PC formatted floppy disk from the WSU Anonymous FTP server:

    ftp.wright.edu/pub/residence/ResConnect/win9x/resnet9x.exe

  2. Insert the floppy drive into your residence computer.
  3. Double-click My Computer.
  4. Double-click your A: drive.
  5. Double-click resnet.exe. The extraction program will place shortcuts to a ResNet folder in your Start menu and on your desktop that contains WS-FTP and TeraTerm Telnet.

D. Download and Install Netscape Communicator

  1. Download Netscape from the WSU FTP server to your Desktop:

    ftp.wright.edu/pub/residence/Netscape/windows/cc32d478.exe

  2. Double-click cc32e473.exe and follow the onscreen instructions.

E. Download and Install the Novell Client

Note: You may be prompted for your operating system disk during the following install.

  1. Download the Novell client from the WSU FTP server and save it to your desktop.

    ftp://ftp.wright.edu/pub/residence/Client/win9x/novell9x.exe

  2. Double-click setup.exe. the program will extract the necessary files and create an icon called setupnw on your desktop.
  3. Double-click the setupnw icon.
  4. Read the license agreement and then click Yes.
  5. Choose Typical install and then click Install.
  6. Click Reboot. Your system will restart and then ask for a Novell login. Log in using your CaTS Novell Network username and password. Remember to Log Out or Shutdown your system when you are finished.
