Getting Started with the Residence Network

System Requirements

To connect to ResNet, you'll need to have a computer with the following minimum requirements.

Windows 98SE, 2000, XP Pro
Pentium 550mHz processor or greater
256 MB of RAM minimum
3com or Intel network card
500 MB of free hard drive space
CD-ROM
Operating System disks

* The minimum hardware requirements are only for machines to be placed on the network. Your computer may meet the requirements to be placed on the network, but these requirements may not be fast enough for your operating system. Please check the minimum requirements set by Microsoft to determine if you have the proper operating system.

Note:

CaTS only supports and guarantees the functionality of Intel and 3Com 3c209, 3c905, and 3c589 ethernet adapter cards.

Power Macintosh
PowerPC G3 400mHz
MacOS 9.1 or greater (MacOS X 10.3 preferred)
256MB of RAM minimum
Built-In Ethernet
500 MB of free hard disk space
CD-ROM
Operating System Disks

Other Systems
If you have a system that runs an alternative operating system that listed above, please contact the CaTS Help Desk for additional information.

You'll Need an Ethernet Card

Ethernet cards for most popular computer models are available at the campus bookstore and most computer supply stores. Get one.

For Windows PCs, CaTS only supports and guarantees the functionality of the 3Com 3c209, 3c905, and 3c589 ethernet adapter cards.

First Things First

Before you have your computer installed on the network, you should back-up your hard drive. This is important. Computing Services and Wright State University are NOT responsible for any loss of data during or after your installation on the network.

What Should Be Checked First?

  • Does your machine turn on and properly load the operating system?
  • Is it free of viruses?
  • Are there any hardware conflicts?
  • Will any of the existing components conflict with the network adapter?

If your computer fails any of these tests, we will not install it. It is your responsibility to correct these problems before installation. You may want to check these items yourself before making an installation appointment.

Pick Up the Phone or Install Yourself

To make an appointment to have your computer installed on the network, contact the Computing Services Help Desk by calling 775-4827, sending e-mail to helpdesk@wright.edu, or by visiting 025 Library Annex. Remember, your computer must meet the minimum hardware and operating system requirements, and you must have an ethernet card.

You can also install yourself.

Adaptive Technology

Wright State supports individuals with adaptive technology needs. When making your installation appointment, your Help Desk representative will discuss with you any adaptive technology you have installed on your computer. You may also want to contact Disability Services by calling 775-5680 or visiting E186 Student Union.

Rules of the Road

It is important that you follow the Acceptable Use Policy and use your network access in a courteous manner. If you have questions or concerns about your network use or feel that others are infringing on your rights, please contact the CaTS Help Desk.

Wired Week

We can install your residence connection for you! Just bring your computer (no need for monitor or peripherals), operating system disk, and network card (NIC) to a Wired Week location. CaTS will configure your machine for the residence network. It's that easy
