Printers, Scanners, and Multifunction Devices

Before purchasing a printer, scanner or multifunction device, please check the specifications to ensure that it is compatible with the type of computer and operating system that you are using. Older systems may not have the required USB port used by newer devices. Not all printers are compatible with Macintosh systems.

To get started, click the link below to download the Express Order Sheet. It lists recommended printers, scanners and multifunction (print/scan/fax) devices including color and black & white laser printers, color inkjet printers and more. For product specifications, please visit the manufacturer's website or contact our recommended reseller.

Monitors and Displays

CaTS generally recommends replacing your display and computer system together so that you can take advantage of extended warranty coverage. Displays purchased separately will come with a more limited warranty, typically one year, and may incur shipping costs for covered repairs.

However, if you need to upgrade your display but do not need to replace the computer, CaTS recommends the HP line of LCD displays, listed on the Pomeroy/HP Express Order Sheet. Pomeroy and CDW also offer discounts to the university on a variety of displays from manufacturers such as Viewsonic, NEC and others. Contact their sales representatives or visit their online stores for current products and pricing.

Information about Non-Supported Systems

If you are considering the purchase of a computer other than those recommended above, you will be purchasing non-supported equipment. This means that support for the system will be your responsibility and that charges may be applied to any services provided by CaTS. In addition, if the non-supported product is found to be interfering with the operation of other systems or does not meet the security requirements of the campus network, it will be disconnected from the network.

Recommended computers come preconfigured with a standard suite of university software including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) and install much more quickly onto the campus network. Non-supported equipment will take longer to set up and will incur installation charges.

Before purchasing a non-supported product, carefully weigh all the factors in the long-term use of the system and don't just look at the initial purchase price. What is the warranty? Recommended systems come with an impressive 5-year warranty. Where will you get support? What if it breaks? Does it have to be sent back to a service center? Many cheaper consumer-grade PCs only come with a 90-day carry-in warranty. Recommended computers are serviced on campus by a technician familiar with the Wright State campus. What version of Windows does it include? Windows XP Home is not recommended - all systems should be purchased with XP Pro.

If you decide to purchase a non-supported PC, you must complete the following form:

Non-Supported Product Form

Faculty also have the option of applying for a Non-Supported Products Exemption.
