WSU Streaming Overview and Tips
Streaming Media Overview
WSU uses Apple's QuickTime platform to provide digital media and streaming
services to the campus. QuickTime allows for the capturing, authoring, compression,
and streaming of digital media. QuickTime is based in the MPEG-4 standard.
As a rule of thumb the WSU firewall does not block any of the ports used by either
of the streaming methods listed later in this document.
While for the most part, streaming is very straight forward, there are several
network configurations that can hinder playback. When going through third-party
ISP, troubleshooting network problems is a problem. The options listed below provide
options for troubleshooting and configuration aimed at avoiding obstacles.
For both Windows and Macintosh, Apple includes an option for auto-configuration. This
option can work in many situations. When the option is invoked, the QuickTime player
attempts to make various connections to servers back at Apple. The options selected
when auto-configuring could cause problems.
The most common issue facing streaming users is NAT (Network Address Translation) devices.
These devices can allow multiple machines to use one IP address. The most common type of
device is a cable or DSL router and wireless access points, such as the Apple Airport.
Newer NAT devices usually have automatic configuration options for streaming video/audio.
Many modern OSes come with firewalls built-in. Depending on how the firewall is configured,
it could also be blocking ports needed by streaming services. Since there are so many
different firewalls, it becomes to important know the ports listed below, they are
required to stream media.
If a client is having problems, these are the first-line options. First make sure the
NAT device firmware is updated and allowing UDP ports 554 and 6970-9999 through. Port 7070
is an optional port and not used by the WSU Streaming Server. If there is not an option to
allow the user to open up the listed UDP ports, follow the directions below to have them
configure their computer to use HTTP port to stream instead. This allows the player to
stream media over the common web or www port. This method does require additional network
overhead, so clients with dial-up connections could see a decline in streaming performance.
