SSL ENCRYPTION

What is SSL Encryption?

In the continuing effort to eliminate spam, CaTS now requires all users with an @wright.edu email address to enable Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption for sending and receiving university email. SSL is simply a way to make sure others cannot view your password or email content while its being sent or received. This requirement includes anyone using the Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP), Post Office Protocol (POP), and Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) protocols. Any user who checks their email with anything other than the WINGS web-based email system falls into one of the protocols above, and are required to enable SSL. For configuration instructions for the most popular email clients, see the links below. Here's a brief description of each of the above mentioned protocols, so that you can determine which one you use or would like to use.

SMTP - SMTP is the protocol for sending email. Everyone will use this one, and should already have it setup for SSL.

IMAP - IMAP is one of the protocols for receiving email. With IMAP, messages are kept on the WSU mail server unless you delete them from the server.

POP - POP is another protocol for receiving email. With POP, however, email messages are downloaded to your computer and removed from the WSU mail server.
