Quick Reference Guide

General Terminology

Portal

  • A portal consists of web pages that act as a starting point for using the Web or web-based services such as email, calendars, message boards, channels, and chat. The portal acts as a gateway to many different pieces of content that you use on a daily basis.

Channel

  • Channels provide at-a-glance information with the ability to click through to expanded content or web resources. Some typical channels that you may see include the number of appointments on your calendar, fragments of personal announcements you have been sent, bookmarks, links to other online resources at WSU, etc.

Browser

  • An Internet Browser interprets HTML, the programming language of the Internet, into the words and graphics that you see when viewing a web page. Example: Internet Explorer, Netscape, Mozilla.

Email Terminology

Email

  • WINGS provides a full-scale email application that allows you to access your email from any computer with internet access on or off campus.

BCC

  • Blind Carbon Copy is used to copy email messages to individuals without advertising their names to other recipients.

Block

  • Block is used to set the mail system to automatically delete or send messages from predefined addresses to the trash.

CC

  • Carbon Copy is used to send a copy of an email message to individuals other than primary recipients.

Contact

  • A person whose information is maintained in your address book.

Filter

  • A mechanism that allows you to define criteria (filters) that tell the system to route certain types of messages to special destination folders.

IMAP Account

  • IMAP is the Internet Message Access Protocol and is the most widely used type of mail account on the Internet. IMAP is centered on the notion that the server is your primary mail repository. Unless intentionally downloaded or deleted, messages are always retained on the server and as such, are accessible from multiple locations.  WINGS allows you to retrieve email messages sent to you from other systems, such as your home Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Read Receipts

  • A mechanism that allows you to get an indication of whether the message recipient opened and read a message that you have sent.

Signature

  • Preformatted text that can be attached as a signature to a message that you send.

Subscribe

  • If you are accessing another mail account through WINGS, you may not see all of the folders that you are accustomed to seeing. If the system uses IMAP as its mail protocol, you may have to subscribe to the folders that it contains in order to see them through the WINGS application. This can be done by clicking on the account folder and clicking the Subscribe link located above the folder view.

Calendar Terminology

Calendar Set

  • Integrated view of more than one calendar. Each calendar set can have a separate name, different privacy settings, and different option settings. One thing to remember is that a calendar set can not be subscribed to, it is simply a view.

Event

  • Any scheduled item that you put in your calendar.

Invite

  • You can invite people to your event in three ways: entering the attendees directly into the input box, using the User Search Tool to find the calendar IDs, or using the Quick Invite feature.

Repeating Event

  • An event that repeats over time in a specific pattern. Once you have scheduled a repeating event, you can not change it to be non-repeating. You can only delete unwanted occurrences, or delete the whole event and start over.

Task

  • A single item that you need to do, often by a specific time.

Group Studio Terminology

Group Studio

  • With Group Studio, you can request the creation of online groups for clubs, affiliations, or interests and set up homepages for these groups.

Public Groups

  • Public groups are open for anyone to join.

Restricted Groups

  • Membership in restricted groups is subject to certain criteria. For example, to access a group homepage for an academic or social organization, an individual must first be accepted as a member of that organization.

Hidden Groups

  • Hidden groups are not displayed in the group category index and do not have a guest view page. Hidden groups are typically used to publish and discuss sensitive information that should not be available even in a restricted group.
