Windows XP Dial-Up Networking

(Establishing a PPP connection to the Internet via WSU)

[ CaTS | Docs ]

Note: Configuring your system for WSU Dial-Up Networking may cause problems with and/or disable your ability to connect to America Online or another service provider (and installing those may interfere with your WSU connection).

I. Defining a PPP Connection

The first step in creating a new PPP connection is to define the modem and phone number to be used for the connection:

  1. Click Start, highlight Connect To, and then click on Show All Connections
(Classic menu users: Click Start, go to settings, then Control Panel. Double-click on Network Connections icon)
  2. Under Network Tasks, click on Create a New Connection
  3. The New Connection Wizard will open, click Next
  4. Select Connect to the Internet, click Next
  5. Select Set up my connection manually, click Next
  6. Select Connect using a dial-up modem, click Next
  7. Type ISP Name: WSU Connect, click Next
  8. Enter the appropriate phone number for the WSU modem pool:

    Faculty: 879-8968
    Staff:
    878-3473
    Students:
    879-8720
    School of Medicine:
    879-8958

  9. Click Next
  10. Enter User Name, Password, Confirm Password. De-select three options at the bottom of the screen. click Next
  11. On the final screen, select Add a shortcut to this connection to desktop, click Finish

After exiting the Make New Connection program, you should see a new icon labeled WSU Network in your Dial-Up Networking folder.

II. Establishing a PPP Connection

  1. Open the Dial-Up Networking folder.
  2. Double-click the WSU Network icon.
  3. Enter your CAMPUS username and CAMPUS password in the Username and Password fields, respectively.
  4. Click Connect to establish a connection.

After you have clicked Continue, you should see status messages indicating that the server is verifying your username and password and then that you have a connection.

You have now established a PPP connection to the WSU Network, and you may run network applications that require a TCP/IP connection (like Netscape).

III. Disconnecting from a PPP Connection

To disconnect an active PPP connection, click on the active task icon for WSU Network (located on the Windows taskbar), and then select Disconnect. Alternatively, you can double-click on the icon labeled WSU Network located in the Dial-Up Networking folder, and then select Disconnect. After you have disconnected, the connection window should automatically close.

Note: You should not disconnect a PPP connection while you still have network applications active. Doing so may result in a system lock-up.
