Windows 2000 Dial-Up Networking

(Establishing a PPP connection to the Internet via WSU)

[ CaTS | Docs ]

Note: Configuring your system for WSU Dial-Up Networking may cause problems with and/or disable your ability to connect to America Online or another service provider (and installing those may interfere with your WSU connection).

I. Defining a PPP Connection

To define a PPP connection, use the connection wizard located in the Dial-Up Networking folder. To access the Dial-Up Networking folder, starting from the Windows 2000 desktop, click the Start button. Then, click the settings button and click Control Panel. Double-click on the "Make New Connection" link. Alternatively, the Dial-Up Networking folder can be accessed from the Accessories submenu of the Start menu.

The first step in creating a new PPP connection is to define the modem and phone number to be used for the connection:

  1. Click the Start button
  2. Click the Settings button
  3. Click the Control Panel
  4. Double-click "Network and Dial-Up Connections"
  5. Double-click "Make New Connection"
  6. Click Next
  7. Select "Dial up to a Private Network" from the list and click Next
  8. On the next screen, enter the phone number for the WSU modem pool:

    879-8968 (Faculty)
    878-3473 (Staff)

    879-8720 (Students)
    879-8958 (School of Medicine)

  9. Click Next
  10. At the "Create Connection" prompt, select "For All Users"
  11. Click Next
  12. Type "WSU Network" for the Connection Name
  13. Place a check in the box titled "Add a shortcut to my desktop"
  14. Select Finish to save the configuration
  15. Right-click on the "WSU Network" icon that was just added to your desktop
  16. Click Properties
  17. When a window comes up, click the Networking tab
  18. Uncheck all of the checkboxes EXCEPT "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click OK
  19. Double-click the "WSU Network" icon
  20. Enter your WSU CAMPUS username and password
  21. Click Dial
  22. Once connected, place a check in the "Don't display this message again" box

II. Establishing a PPP Connection

  1. Open the Dial-Up Networking folder
  2. Double-click the WSU Network icon
  3. Enter your CAMPUS username and CAMPUS password in the Username and Password fields
  4. Click Connect to establish a connection. After you have clicked Continue, you should see status messages indicating that the server is verifying your username and password and then that you have a connection

You have now established a PPP connection to the WSU Network, and you may run network applications that require a TCP/IP connection (like Netscape).

III. Disconnecting from a PPP Connection

To disconnect an active PPP connection, click on the active task icon for WSU Network (located on the Windows taskbar), and then select Disconnect. Alternatively, you can double-click on the icon labeled WSU Network located in the Dial-Up Networking folder, and then select Disconnect. After you have disconnected, the connection window should automatically close.

Note: You should not disconnect a PPP connection while you still have network applications active. Doing so may result in a system lock-up.
